About Waghorn Sidebottom 3

Sidebottom 3 has one of the longest recorded lives of any Waghorn marking, appearing on covers from 1837 through to 1841 — a span covering the agency's rise from an improvised private service to the established overland channel between Britain and India. Its earliest recorded strike falls in January 1837.

Listed in black as both Sidebottom 3 and Smith 3, and accompanied in this catalogue by a sub-variety (Sidebottom 3a), it is among the workhorse marks of the agency's most active years. The breadth of its date range makes it especially useful for students of the route, since covers bearing it bracket the period in which the overland option decisively overtook the Cape passage.
