Beautifully struck oval handstamp with manuscript "1 R" charge on folded letter datelined Calcutta Apr. 27, 1838, to London, England, sender's directive "per overland dispatch for Mr. Waghorn", red Calcutta Steam Letter despatch, Alexandria and Malta transit, and London arrival datestamps, red boxed "INDIA", boxed "Indes Orien par Alexandrie" and boxed "British Foreign" handstamps, disinfection slits applied in Malta VERY FINE STRIKE OF THE TYPE 3 THOMAS WAGHORN HANDSTAMP ON A WESTBOUND COVER TO LONDON. ONLY 44 ARE RECORDED BY SMITH. The letter makes interesting mention of receiving the addressee's last letter (Nov. 25, 1837) on the day this letter was written (Apr. 27, 1838). He mentions the use of the Waghorn service and that more information could surely be sought out at the Jerusalem Coffee House in London. The Jerusalem Coffee House in Cornhill, London, was a well-known location frequented by merchants, sea captains and members of the East India Company

WAGHORN SUEZ" HANDSTAMP GOING WESTBOUND FROM INDIA TO FRANCE. Thomas Waghorn is credited for developing a new route for mail to travel from Great Britain to their increasingly important empire in India. His service aimed to provide an express mail service - reducing transit times by nearly two thirds by transporting mail Overland thru Egypt rather than sailing around Cape of Good Hope. Between 1835-1837, with mail directed to him by the British Post Office, he conveyed mail, people and goods by this route. Major setbacks, including new competition set up by the British Post Office, eventually saw his downfall.

This letter traveled via MALTA, where it was disinfected and stamped on reverse. The journey from BOMBAY to LONDON thus look 64 days or approximately two months which was a substantial improvement compared with the route round the Cape of Good Hope The route: To Suez per: Hugh Lindsay ex Bombay 20.10.1839, From Alexandria per: Hermes ex Alexandria 24.02.1839, Volcano ex Malta 01.03.1839, Arrived Marseilles 07.03.1839, Arrived London 09.03.1839.
