Description

EGYPT, 1838, "Care of Mr. Waghorn, Suez" (Sidebottom 3; Smith 3). Bold strike of oval handstamp with manuscript "1" (rupee) and agent initials on 1838 folded cover (missing inner page) to Havre, France, red Calcutta Steam Letter Jul. 1838 boxed despatch datestamp with manuscript "1-7" rate (1r7a) on back, sender's directive "Bombay & Suez", red boxed "INDIA", "Indes Orien par Alexandrie", "Purifie au Lazaret, Malte", and red "Paquebots de la Mediterranee" handstamps, Alexandria Oct. 7 and Paris Oct. 27 transit and Havre Oct. 28 arrival datestamps, cover with disinfection slits VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL STRIKE OF THE TYPE 3 THOMAS WAGHORN HANDSTAMP—ONLY 44 ARE RECORDED BY SMITH. Smith records uses between Jul. 22, 1837 and Jan. 9, 1841.
