Description
Egypt, 1838, "Care of Mr. Waghorn, Suez" (Sidebottom 3; Smith 3). Clear and strong oval handstamp on 1838 folded cover (missing interior page) to Havre, France, red Calcutta Steam Letter Nov. 4, 1838 boxed despatch datestamp with manuscript "1-7as" rate (1r7a) on back, sender's directive "via Bombay & Suez", red boxed "INDIA", "Indes Orien par Alexandrie", and "Purifie au Lazaret, Malte" handstamps, Alexandria Jun. 17 transit and Havre Jul. 7 arrival datestamps, the latter affected by opening, cover with disinfection slits, file fold thru Waghorn marking, and minor toned spots VERY FINE STRIKE OF THE THOMAS WAGHORN TYPE 3 HANDSTAMP. ONLY 44 ARE RECORDED BY SMITH. Smith records uses between Jul. 22, 1837 and Jan. 9, 1841.
