Egypt, 1839, "Care of Mr. Waghorn, Suez" (Sidebottom 3; Smith 3). Faint but clear oval handstamp on 1839 folded letter to London, England, red Calcutta Steam Letter Jan. 5, 1839 boxed despatch datestamp with manuscript "15" rate (1r5a) on back, sender's directive "per Overland via Bombay", red boxed "INDIA", "Purifie au Lazaret, Malte", and partial "BRITISH FOREIGN" handstamps, Alexandria Feb. 17 transit and London Mar. 9 arrival datestamps, rated "7/5" FINE AND SCARCE STRIKE OF THE TYPE 3 THOMAS WAGHORN HANDSTAMP. ONLY 44 ARE RECORDED BY SMITH. Smith records uses between Jul. 22, 1837 and Jan. 9, 1841.
