1816 London – Calcutta entire via Cape route, with London "INDIA PACKET LETTER/19 JA 19/1816/GPO/LONDON" despatch mark, bearing "7/" double letter UK–India packet rate applied in manuscript, sent via H.M.'s Ship TOWEY. Upon reaching Calcutta, Giles SR7 "KINGS POSTAGE/Co's INLD. Do/181.." receipt handstamp applied, dated "1 June 1816" & rate "3R" double letter sea postage (3R was equivalent to 7s) due, collected from the recipient, as delivered at Calcutta and no inland postage was needed. Sent by Du Pré Alexander, 2nd Earl of Caledon.

1816 London – Chittagong 3s 6d rate entire via Cape route, with "INDIA PACKET LETTER/LONDON" despatch & bearing rate "3/6" (3s 6d single letter UK–India packet postage) applied in manuscript, sent via Cape route through HMS British Hero & offloaded at Chittagong Port. There, Giles 2 "CHITTAGONG/POST OFFICE/11 of Nov. 1816" handstamp applied, date applied by manuscript, sent to Calcutta & there Giles SR7 "KINGS POSTAGE/Co's INLD. Do/181." bearing handstamp, date "17th Nov. 1816" & rate "2R6A" (comprising 1R8A single letter packet postage equivalent of the British 3s 6d packet rate + 14A double letter Chittagong–Calcutta inland due) applied in manuscript, which was collected from the recipient.

1815-18 Two folded entires from London to Calcutta and Madras, the 1815 cover bears black boxed KINGS POST ds, 1818 cover straight-line KINGS POSTAGE, both applied on reverse, neatly mounted and written up on album page, a fine and scarce pair.

This handstamp: A black colour boxed Ship letter receipt handstamp "KING'S POSTE/CO's INLD. d° /181" ',used between 1816-1819, a very desirable and sought after handstamp. Other Marks: 1) A black colour Crowned "INDIA PACKET LETTER / G.P.O. / LONDON / DATE / YEAR" ', used from the time of Act of 1815 until the Act of 1819 at LONDON through the India Ship Letter Office. A rare handstamp. 2) The despatch stamp of INVERNESS in double circle "DAY / MONTH / YEAR" in black. 3) A red octagonal "MAY / WV / YEAR" and 5 in circle at the centre, receipt mark.

Large part of folded letter (missing side flaps) with "London 29 July 1816" along top and bold "India Ship Letter, London 29 JY 29, 1816" crowned circular datestamp, addressed to Madras, then forwarded to Pondicherry, French India, sender's directive "p Ship via Bombay, Bengal", subsequently crossed out as this cover went via Calcutta instead, well-struck framed "KING'S POST" handstamp (Giles SR7) with manuscript "2d (181)7 Jany" added of Calcutta in transit, "KINGS POSTAGE/INLAND POSTAGE" two-line handstamp (Giles SR1) with manuscript "from Calcutta" below on arrival and framed "Post not Paid" handstamp (Giles 15), forwarded to Pondicherry with "Post Paid/Fort St. George" handstamp (Giles 4) and "19/Jan" handstamp, various rate markings, cover with some minor wear, still Very Fine, an exceptional use and likely a unique combination of markings Cavendish - MADRAS/CALCUTTA/LONDON - RARE COVER WITH TWO DIFFERENT P.O.s’ “KINGS POSTAGE” MARKS; 29 July 1816 E (side-flaps removed) to Madras “P. [Ship] Lord Cathcart” (on flap) charged “1/2” with a very fine “INDIA SHIP LETTER/[Crown]/G.P.O/LONDON” c.d.s. (slight fold) on the front with a remarkably fine Calcutta boxed “KING’S POSTe/Cos. INLd. do./[8an]” d.s. (2 Jan. 1817) nicely placed on the flap; then redirected to Pondicherry and so with Madras mainly v. fine oval-framed “Post Paid/Fort St George” with “19/Jan” on the front, but also with very fine matching Handstruck “KINGS POSTAGE [f6 45]” with “INLAND POSTAGE [from Calcutta fs 16]” (HG SR1) nicely placed on the flap and so then also having a very fine small boxed Madras “Post.not.Paid” on the front. Possibly a Unique combination of markings - exceptional to have the Kings Postage marks of two POs on one cover. Exhibition Item. Madras finally got its own Handstruck King’s Postage marks. LIVERPOOL/MADRAS - RARE CORRECT USAGE OF “LIVERPOOL/INDIA SHIP LR” (WITH RARE LINED “KINGS.POSTAGE/COMPYs. INLAND Do.”); Remarkable 12 Feb. 1819 EL (minor toning) - possibly written in Dublin (full typed transcript of long family contents) to Madras “P the [Ship] Bengal via Calcutta”, but most unusually not posted in London (as per regulations) and so with a very fine boxed “LIVERPOOL/INDIA SHIP LR” (Rob.In.1; rare prior to 1819 - use prior to 12 July 1819 were for outgoing mails, from that date it was used, very commonly, for incoming India Letters to GB); charged “1¼ oz 5/10” (5 times the regular 1s-2d rate as if from London); exceptionally also having the “KINGS POSTAGE” marks of both Calcutta (HG SR7; 14 July 1819) and Madras (rare HG SR2; “Very Scarce” - only used June-Aug. 1819) across join, or on lower flap, respectively. There is also a very fine oval “MADRAS” d.s. (1 Aug.) on the front with a fair matching Madras boxed “Post not Paid”. Rare correct usage of the Liverpool India Ship Letter mark for outgoing mail and a rare example of the short-lived lined Madras “KINGS POSTAGE...” mark.
