Description

1816 London – Calcutta entire via Cape route, with London "INDIA PACKET LETTER/19 JA 19/1816/GPO/LONDON" despatch mark, bearing "7/" double letter UK–India packet rate applied in manuscript, sent via H.M.'s Ship TOWEY. Upon reaching Calcutta, Giles SR7 "KINGS POSTAGE/Co's INLD. Do/181.." receipt handstamp applied, dated "1 June 1816" & rate "3R" double letter sea postage (3R was equivalent to 7s) due, collected from the recipient, as delivered at Calcutta and no inland postage was needed. Sent by Du Pré Alexander, 2nd Earl of Caledon.
