Description

EGYPT, 1838, "CARE OF MR. WAGHORN/ALEXANDRIA." (Sidebottom 4b; Smith 4b). Bold strike of two-line handstamp with manuscript "52/G.W.W." initials at top right belonging to George W. Wheatley (Waghorn's agent in London), on folded letter datelined London Feb. 1, 1838, addressed to Calcutta, India, London Feb. 3, 1838 despatch datestamp on back, sender's directive "p Overland Dispatch via Marseilles", manuscript "4/7" rate, red "P-D" and red "Angleterre par Calais" handstamps, Bombay transit and Calcutta May 1 arrival datestamps VERY FINE STRIKE OF THIS THOMAS WAGHORN TYPE 4b HANDSTAMP, ESPECIALLY SCARCE IN THIS CHOICE CONDITION. Smith records uses of both Types 4a and 4b between March 1836 and May 1839.
