Description

EGYPT, 1838, "CARE OF MR. WAGHORN/ALEXANDRIA." (Sidebottom 4b; Smith 4b). Bold strike of two-line handstamp with manuscript "11/G.W.W." initials at top right belonging to George W. Wheatley (Waghorn's agent in London), on folded letter datelined Blackheath (London) Sep. 27, 1838, addressed to "H. Clark, Esq., Surgeon 22nd Regt" in Nuseerabad, India, London Sep. 23, 1838 despatch datestamp on back, manuscript "2/6" rate, London despatch, partial Bombay transit VERY FINE. A REMARKABLY WELL-STRUCK EXAMPLE OF THE TYPE 4b THOMAS WAGHORN HANDSTAMP. Smith records uses of both Types 4a and 4b between March 1836 and May 1839.
