Feldman description: EARLIEST RECORDED EAST-TO-WEST WAGHORN COVER . 1836 (Sept. 30) Folded letter from Bombay to London, ms “P. Discovery / via Red Sea” and with superb boxed “To the care of / Mr. WAGHORN” hs at centre, 3/6 ms rate, received in London 6 Feb. 1837 after a transit of 129 days (bs). The Waghorn marking, Sidebottom type 10, precedes his earliest listing by three months. Additional information: Waghorn agent, Brownrigg & Co., Bombay, h/s on back. Clear strike of two-line boxed handstamp on flap of folded letter (part of bottom missing due to placement by seal), docketing indicating Jan. 11, 1838 despatch and addressed to London, then forwarded to Tours, France, manuscript "Care of Mr Waghorn" directive at top and "p 'Hugh Lindsay'", Alexandria, Calais, London, and Tours arrival datestamps, "INDIA" in oval, "British Foreign", and "Indes Orien par Alexandrie" handstamps, cover missing side flaps and mended opening tears on top flap which affect handstamp FINE STRIKE OF THE WAGHORN TYPE 10 HANDSTAMP--SMITH RECORDS ONLY 21 EXAMPLES. Smith records 21 examples of this handstamp, dated between Sep. 30, 1836, and Jan. 1, 1842. The Hugh Lindsay was a paddle steamer built for the naval arm of the British East India Company. Clear strike of two-line boxed handstamp on flap of folded letter (slightly affected by opening seal), datelined Bombay Apr. 23, 1838 and addressed to Londonderry, Ireland, then forwarded to Glin Castle, sender's directive "To England via Red Sea by the steamer Atalanta from Bombay", Alexandria, Malta, and London transit and Derry arrival datestamps, "INDIA", "Indes Orien par Alexandrie", "British Foreign", and "Paquebot de la Mediterranee" handstamps, disinfection slits applied in transit, cover with edgewear FINE AND SCARCE WAGHORN TYPE 10 HANDSTAMP--SMITH RECORDS ONLY 21 EXAMPLES. Hong Kong Postal History Waghorn Overland Mail 1839 (10 May) a long and detailed entire letter from Russell Sturgis in Canton to Frederick Huth in London "via Bombay and overland" and "via Marseilles" and rated "3/6" and bearing a good strike of the boxed "To the care of/Mr WAGHORN" (Sidebottom type 10) plus faint "INDIA" in large oval. One flap with "Recd at Bombay 12th July 1839 ..." with London arrival c.d.s. (30.10), the other flap with Marseille transit (20.10) and a fine strike of "british/foreign" and manuscript "1.10/1.8". There are a couple of light vertical filing folds; fresh and a very presentable example of this very scarce mail, only six covers recorded sent from China. The long letter gives an account of the start of the opium troubles. "On 22 March all communications between Canton and Macao, Whampoa was cut off; some factories surrounded by armed men and boats; we have been detained as close prisoners and deprived of the assistance of our servants, cooks, etc., and threatened with the stoppage of our supplies of provisions and water." 20,000 chests of opium were detained "... with severe penalties if we refuse to sign a bond agreeing to the punishment by death of every person concerned in a vessel found bringing opium to China". Hong Kong. The Non-Treaty Ports Macao Waghorn Overland Mail 1839 (18 Aug.) entire letter from Bibby Adams & Co to Huth in London "per H.M.S. Algerine to Suez", "Via Marseilles" and boxed "Care of Mr Waghorn" (type 3). There is a good strike of double oval "Forwarded by Edmond Bibby & Co/Bombay.5th Decr", a readable strike of the boxed "to the care of/mr waghorn", some faint transit marks including "india" in oval, French P.O. Alexandria, disinfected in Malta, handstruck rate mark "british10d./foreign1/10½" and London arrival (27.2). A rare and desirable cover. Three Waghorn covers have been recorded from China being from Canton (2) and this cover from Macao

Clear strike of two-line boxed handstamp on top flap of 1840 folded letter datelined Bombay Dec. 1 and addressed to Paris, France, sender's directive "per Cleopatra via Suez, care of Mr. Waghorn," red boxed "Paquebots de la Mediterranee" and light "Purifie au Lazaret, Malte" handstamps, Alexandria Dec. 24 transit and lightly struck Paris Jan. 8 (1841) arrival datestamps, rated "20" due VERY FINE. A CLEAR STRIKE OF THE SCARCE WAGHORN TYPE 10 HANDSTAMP—SMITH RECORDS ONLY 21 EXAMPLES. Smith records 21 examples of this handstamp, dated between Sep. 30, 1836, and Jan. 1, 1842. The Cleopatra was a paddle steam frigate of the East India Company that first arrived in Bombay in April 1840. It was used as a transport for mail between Bombay, Karachi, Aden, and Suez. It ultimately sunk during a cyclone in 1847 in the Indian Ocean, killing nearly 300 passengers. Ex Smith.

Cavendish description: RARE LATE USAGE OF THE BOXED BOMBAY "To the care of/Mr. WAGHORN" CACHET ON COVER FROM CALCUTTA TO FRANCE VIA LONDON; Unusual 13 Feb. 1841 E (disinfection toning on reverse does not detract) to Agents ("Messrs. Salmus, Mackillip, Dent & Co.") in London "via Bombay, Egypt & Marseilles", charged "1/8" and the "20" [decimes] being forwarded to "Paris" (London F.B. c.d.s.'s of 9/10 Apr.1841; having a very fine (slightly overstruck) boxed "To the care of/Mr. WAGHORN" of the Bombay office on the reverse. This is Sidebottom Type 10, of which he only recorded 8 covers, none of which were posted later than Dec. 1839. Late usage of a rare type.
