Description

1838, "To the care of/MR. WAGHORN" (Sidebottom 10; Smith 10). Clear strike of two-line boxed handstamp on flap of folded letter (slightly affected by opening seal), datelined Bombay Apr. 23, 1838 and addressed to Londonderry, Ireland, then forwarded to Glin Castle, sender's directive "To England via Red Sea by the steamer Atalanta from Bombay", Alexandria, Malta, and London transit and Derry arrival datestamps, "INDIA", "Indes Orien par Alexandrie", "British Foreign", and "Paquebot de la Mediterranee" handstamps, disinfection slits applied in transit, cover with edgewear FINE AND SCARCE WAGHORN TYPE 10 HANDSTAMP--SMITH RECORDS ONLY 21 EXAMPLES. IRELAND IS A RARE DESTINATION FOR WAGHORN MAIL. Smith records 21 examples of this handstamp, dated between Sep. 30, 1836, and Jan. 1, 1842.
