AFGHANISTAN - First Anglo-Afghan War, 1842 "AFIGHANISTAN/Bearing" Handstamp. Clear strike in black with manuscript "9 November" and "5as" date and rate added on back of folded letter datelined "Camp near Peshawar, Wednesday 9 Nov 1842" and addressed to Indore, India, Capt. Riddel correspondence and numbered "No. 116" , Ferozepore Bearing boxed handstamp with Nov. 15 date and 5 (annas) rate added (Giles 2) and partially struck framed "FPO" handstamp (Giles 3, noted as scarce ), mild vertical file fold thru Afghanistan marking FINE AND VERY RARE COMBINATION OF HANDSTAMPS FROM THE FIRST ANGLO-AFGHAN WAR. ONLY TWO FPO HANDSTAMPS ON COVER ARE RECORDED in private hands. The FPO handstamp was used at the exchange of military mail to the civilian post office. This marking from Ferozepore is only known used in 1842. The Magnolia collection includes both recorded examples (see following lot). Ex Dietrich.
