Reoccupation of Kabul, First Afghan War 1842 (Nov 13): Unpaid entire letter, Riddell correspondence, written from Major-General Pollock's Camp at Attock, South East of Peshawar to Mrs. Riddell at Indore, Malwah (letter number 118); struck with superb negative "AFIGHANISTAN / Bearing" in brown with manuscript "14 November 5 as." inserted; with flap also displaying superb "FEROZEPORE / Bearing" handstamp in black. Superb contents: "We have a very disagreeable business before us, viz. an execution of a native officer. He is a Subadar in the 27th Native Infantry and was tried for desertion while we were in Cabool and sentenced to death. He is to be shot the day after tomorrow...he deserves the punishment as he not only deserted in Ghuznee but induced a great number of Mussulmen in the regiment to go with him and was afterwards seen fighting against us....".
