Description

AFGHANISTAN - First Anglo-Afghan War, 1842 "AFIGHANISTAN/Bearing" Handstamp. Clear and mostly legible strike with manuscript "24 Oct 42" date added on back of folded letter datelined "Camp Jigdilih, 16th Oct 1842" and addressed to Ahmednuggar, India, Pottinger correspondence, Ferozepore Bearing boxed handstamp (Giles 2) with manuscript Nov. 6 date added, manuscript "12as" rate notation, interesting contents describing the destruction of small villages and castles, Very Fine, the sender Eldred Pottinger (1811-1843), who is known as the "Hero of Herat" for his assistance in repelling the Persian and Russian army in Herat in 1837, was an army officer and diplomat, he was one of the hostages handed over to Akbar Khan and eventually released in Sept. 1842, just about a month before this letter
