Description
India, Gwalior, 1830, "P.O./Meywar/F. Force/18__" Circular Handstamp (Giles 1). Clearly struck with manuscript "(18)30 15 May" date added on back of folded letter from Lt. W. Baring Gould dateline at Neemuch, addressed to Lewtenchard, England, framed "INDIA LETTER/PLYMOUTH" (Robertson In. 1) and blue framed "Launceston/Penny Post" handstamps, Calcutta (May 31) transit backstamp, manuscript "11" due rate marking, cover with minor splitting mostly along internal folds and minor edge tear just touching outer frame of handstamp, still Very Fine strike of this scarce marking, following the Third Anglo-Maratha War and defeat of the Pindharis in 1818, this force was mostly used as police in nature, and was under the direction of Lord Combermere in an advance against Durjan Sal in Bharatpur in 1826
