1833 INDIA LETTER PORTSMOUTH WRAPPER MADRAS GPO PER THE MARY ANNE TO LONDON. This is a premium 1833 transatlantic postal history WRAPPER (no content) sent from MADRAS, India, to LONDON, arriving via the port of PORTSMOUTH. This item is a superb example of a private /"India Letter/" carried during the final years of the East India Company’s monopoly, featuring high-quality strikes of desirable maritime handstamps. MARITIME HISTORY: THE SHIP /"MARY ANNE/"The MARY ANNE was a notable 587-ton merchantman built of durable Indian Teak in CALCUTTA in 1817. As a /"Country Ship,/" she was a workhorse for the EAST INDIA COMPANY routes. During the 1830 s, she was renowned for her speed and reliability on the Madras-to-London run. Beyond her postal service, the MARY ANNE has a storied legacy in colonial history, having been commissioned for several voyages as a convict transport ship to the Australian colonies during this same decade.
