About this mark

The Calmeer Point HG 1 handstamp

Point Calimere, historically Calmeer Point, is a low headland on the Coromandel Coast in Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu, known also as Cape Calimere or by its Tamil name Kodiakkarai. The cape and its salt marshes lie at the southern edge of the Kaveri delta, opposite the Palk Strait toward Sri Lanka. As a coastal signal and post station of the Madras Presidency, it served the mail passing along the southern Coromandel shore.

Calmeer Point HG 1 is a early Indian handstruck postal marking of the post office at Calmeer Point — the present-day Point Calimere — in the Madras Presidency, British India, recorded in use around 1855. Known strikes are in red. Its "HG 1" designation is the figure number assigned in the Hammond Giles catalogue of the handstruck postage stamps of India.

A single surviving cover bearing this mark is recorded in the census, with images and provenance. On the strength of that count the mark is graded "1 example recorded" — the grade moves automatically as new covers are recorded. Collectors searching for calmeer point pre stamp covers, calmeer point postal history or "Calmeer Point HG1" material can compare HG 1 across every office or browse the rest of the Calmeer Point marks.
