Description

Egypt, 1836, "CARE OF MR. WAGHORN/ALEXANDRIA." (Sidebottom 4b; Smith 4b). Fair strike of two-line handstamp on folded letter datelined Southampton (England) Mar. 29, 1836 and addressed to Calcutta, India, London Mar. 31, 1836 despatch datestamp, sender's directive "Care of Mr. Waghorn Alexandria", rated "3/2", red Calcutta G.P.O. Jun. arrival backstamp, cover with severe ink erosion which has been heavily repaired with tape (just affecting Waghorn marking), still a Fine strike, Smith records uses of both Types 4a and 4b between March 1836 and May 1839, making the example offered here one of the earliest recorded strikes
