Description

1838, "CARE OF MR. WAGHORN/ALEXANDRIA." (Sidebottom 4b; Smith 4b). Bold strike of two-line handstamp with manuscript "13/G.W.W." initials at top right belonging to George W. Wheatley (Waghorn's agent in London), on folded letter datelined Blackheath (London) Aug. 29, 1838, addressed to "H. Clark, Esq., Surgeon 22nd Regt" in Nuseerabad, India, sender's directive "By the Overland Despatch", manuscript "2/6" rate, London despatch, Bombay transit, and Nuseerabad arrival backstamps (Giles 2) EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF THE FINEST STRIKES OF THIS EASTBOUND THOMAS WAGHORN HANDSTAMP. Smith records uses of both Types 4a and 4b between March 1836 and May 1839.
