Description
India, Used in Damaun, 1854, ½a Blue, Die II (2D; SG 6). Mostly large margins, just clear at top, tied by diamond grid cancel with faint but clear violet "DAMAUN Paid" boxed datestamp (Giles 1) with manuscript "15-1-57" date added on back of large part petite native cover, Bombay Jan. 17, 1857 datestamp, cover missing large part of front panel with address, slight overall soiling STILL FINE. A VERY RARE AND DESIRABLE USE OF THE 1854 HALF-ANNA LITHOGRAPH FROM DIE II USED IN DAMAUN -- AN OFFICE IN THE PORTUGUESE INDIA TERRITORY. Damaun was the only British post office in the Portuguese territories within India. Covers from Damaun are rarely encountered. Ex Dr. Kornan.
