Ahmedabad, chief town of the District, situated 23°2' N and 72°35' E, 310 miles from Bombay. It was captured from the Moguls by the Marathas in 1753, and in 1818, with the overthrow of the Peshwa, it was ceded to the British.

Ahmedabad's four handstamps, from 1841 to 1852, are worked mainly in red and are largely in common use, with the late HG 4 the scarce exception. The chief town of its Gujarat district, captured from the Moguls by the Marathas in 1753 before passing to the British, Ahmedabad leaves a compact record of ordinary postal work.
