Description
New Anchorage, 1829, "NEW ANCHORAGE POST OFFICE" Handstamp (Giles 1). Wonderfully clear strike of double-oval handstamp with manuscript "20th Sept. 1829" date on flap of folded letter in French datelined Havre, France Jul. 14, 1829, addressed to Calcutta, neat red Calcutta Nov. 22 arrival datestamp (Giles G8) and boxed "Inld Ptg. 1.4/Ship Do-8/(4) Rs. 1.12" handstamp (Giles SR14, scarce) indicating quadruple rate, Very Fine strike of the rare New Anchorage handstamp, of which only three are recorded, this is almost certainly the finest of the three, it seems that one of the dates is in error as the distance between New Anchorage and Calcutta is only around 20 miles, not warranting a two-month transit
