Description

1847 Mahomedpore – Bordeaux entire via Marseilles route, with Mahomedpore G1 "MAHOMEDPORE/Paid" despatch handstamp, date "2 May 47" & rate "10 As" (comprising 8A British steam postage up to Suez & 2A double letter inland postage to Calcutta, as between ¼–1 tolah wt.). At Calcutta, SD11 "CALCUTTA/GPO/SHIP LETTER/4 MAY 4/1847" & SD19 "INDIA" transit marks applied, sent through Marseilles via Suez, Alexandria & Malta, and there French Sea Post Office mark dated "19 JUN 47" applied. Finally reached Bordeaux, where 19 decimes French bearing sea + inland postage was collected from the recipient.
