Thanesar (the Tannesure of early records) is an ancient city in Kurukshetra district, Haryana, on the Sarasvati plain, a great Hindu pilgrimage centre and the historic seat of Harsha's empire. It stood on the Delhi–Lahore route beside the sacred tanks of Kurukshetra. As a route town of the north-western plains its pre-1854 markings record the mail of the Delhi–Punjab corridor.
