Description

INDIA, Sobathoo, 1835, "SOBATHOO/POSTPAID/18_" Handstamp (Giles 1). Excellent strike of boxed handstamp with manuscript "3a, 17 March (18)35" on back of folded cover (missing internal page), addressed to Capt. Garrett of the 9th Cavalry in Kurnal with manuscript "to await his arrival" notation, Very Fine strike of this cancel listed as scarce by Giles and only recorded in use in 1835, the recipient Captain Charles Garrett (1809-1843) fought in a number of battles within India and was ultimately killed in the Battle of Hyderabad on Mar. 24, 1843
