Kohat (recorded under the same name) is a city in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, set in a valley south of Peshawar and long a garrison guarding the Kohat Pass toward the Afghan border. Noted for its nearby salt mines, it became a frontier cantonment and district town under British rule. Its early postal markings belong to the first British mail across the north-west frontier after 1849.
