1st Afghan War - The Army in Kandahar 1842 (July 12): Entire letter from Kandahar "Private / Service" from Major Robert Leech of the Bombay Engineers to Allahabad, mailed via Quetta and Sukkur to avoid the ongoing turbulence in Afghanistan, struck in transit with oval framed "FEROZEPORE / FREE" in red with date "8 Aug 1842" in manuscript. Minor edge wear to be expected but rare. Note: Major Robert Leech was Political Advisor to the late Envoy (MacNaghten) and Minister. Provenance: Cavendish, Derby, 23 Oct 2002, lot 4139.
