Dharamshala (the Dhurumshalla of early records) is a hill town in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh, set on a spur of the Dhauladhar range and today the winter capital of the state. Developed by the British as a hill station and cantonment after the annexation of the Kangra hills, it drew garrison and civil residents to its cool heights. Its pre stamp postal markings document the early mail of the western Himalayan foothills.
