Batala (the Battala of pre stamp records) is one of the oldest cities of Punjab, in Gurdaspur district, India. A historic walled town with Mughal and Sikh-era monuments, it was an important trade and craft centre north-east of Amritsar. Following the British annexation of the Punjab in 1849 it became a district post town, and its early handstamps record the Company's mail across the Bari Doab.
