About this mark

The Secundrarao HG 1 handstamp

This town is located at 27°42′N, 78°24′E in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The Post Office Manual published in 1858 does not list it on pages XCVIII through to XCX, but the 1869 Postal Guide shows it as a Head Office under Allygurh. The cover on which this stamp has been discovered is from 1854, and the reason for this discrepancy is (probably) because the 1858 Manual based its data on 1854 and omitted recently opened post offices.

Secundrarao HG 1 is a pre-1854 handstruck postal marking of the post office at Secundrarao — the present-day Sikandra Rao — in the North Western Provinces, British India, recorded in use around 1854. Known strikes are in black. Its "HG 1" designation is the figure number assigned in the Hammond Giles catalogue of the handstruck postage stamps of India.

A single surviving cover bearing this mark is recorded in the census, with images and provenance. On the strength of that count the mark is graded "1 example recorded" — the grade moves automatically as new covers are recorded. Collectors searching for secundrarao pre stamp covers, secundrarao postal history or "Secundrarao HG1" material can compare HG 1 across every office or browse the rest of the Secundrarao marks.
