Description
India, Nagore, 1800, "POST PAID/NAGORE" Handstamp (Unrecorded in Giles). Bold and clear strike of oval on top flap of folded letter datelined Jan. 18, 1800, addressed to Tranquebar, manuscript "3 annas, 18 Jany" notation on back, address panel with slight stain VERY FINE STRIKE OF THIS STRIKE WHICH IS UNRECORDED BY GILES. AN IMPORTANT STAMPLESS-PERIOD RARITY. This predates the other Nagore marking listed in Giles by more than 50 years (Giles 1, 1853). Of interesting note, this was sent to Tranquebar which was a Danish settlement that was eventually sold to the British in 1845.
