Description

1838, "FROM MR. LANGLEY/AGENT TO MR. WAGHORN" (Sidebottom 5; Smith 5). Bold strike of boxed handstamp on flap of folded letter with Jun. 14, 1838 docketing from Bangalore to Edinburgh, Scotland, forwarded to Ayr, manuscript "Care of Mr. Waghorn, Suez" at top left, indistinct despatch, Alexandria transit, Edinburgh and Ayr arrival datestamps, boxed "Indes Orien par Alexandrie" and "British Foreign" handstamps, disinfection slits applied in transit, cover with some wear and some hinge reinforced folds FINE. A RARE WAGHORN HANDSTAMP--SMITH RECORDS ONLY FIVE EXAMPLES OF TYPE 5. The Smith book records only five examples of the Type 5 handstamp, dated between Jun. 14, 1838, and Jun. 22, 1839. Ex "Oscar" and Fikry.
