About Waghorn Sidebottom 5

Sidebottom 5 was in use across the second half of the 1830s, on covers dated between 1836 and 1839, with an earliest recorded strike in June 1838. It sits among the established marks of the agency's early maturity, when the overland route had proved itself and traffic through Egypt was growing.

Struck in black and catalogued as Smith 5 as well as Sidebottom 5, it is one of the several closely dated marks from this period whose overlapping use shows that Waghorn's agency did not rely on a single cachet at a time. The recorded covers help distinguish it from its near-contemporaries and fix its place in the sequence.
