Postal cover from waghorn (), bearing unknown handstamp in unknown. Dated 4 January 1839. Scarce example of postal history from this office. Corinphila: 1839 (Jan 4): Prepaid entire letter at single rate from London to Thomas N. Richards in Calcutta, endorsed "via Marseilles", annotated "79 / GWW" (George W. Wheatley), rated "3/8½d." in red manuscript (1/10d. British postage + 1/10½d. French postage for a letter under ¼ ounce) struck with fi ne "CARE OF MR. WAGHORN / ALEXANDRIA" in black (Sidebottom type 4b), with London despatch cds (Jan 4) on reverse in black. Circular "Angl. / Calais" entry mark in blue (Jan 6) and oval "P-D" in red; carried from Marseilles on the French steamer "Rhamses" to Syra (Jan 31), the "Scamandre" to Alexandria (Feb 4) and the EIC "Hugh Lindsay" from Suez (Feb 24) to Bombay with arrival in black showing "15" annas charge for journey to Calcutta with "G.P.O." arrival (April 2) in red. A fi ne and interesting cover - no advantage was gained using the French route on this voyage - the cover arrived in Bombay on the "Hugh Lindsay" - which also carried mails that had been sent from London via Falmouth some two weeks later than this letter.
