MOULMEIN - PACKET LETTER TO G.B. EX "CAMP AT MOULMEIN" WITH FINE RED BOXED "Paid" D.S.; 27 Dec. 1841 EL from "Camp at Moulmein" to London "Per Steamer Ganges via Calcutta. Via Falmouth" with a very fine red boxed "MOULMEIN/1841 December 28/Paid [Rp.1]" on the flap (frame line just crossed by seal opening tear) and a very fine red oval "INDIA" on the front. The long and interesting contents (full typed transcript) note that the writer's regiment was sent from India to China but diverted to Burma because "His Burmese Majesty, Tharawadee, left his Capital and set out for Rangoon with a large army...". But nothing came of this and all seemed to have gone quiet. The writer expects his regiment to replace the 37th (of whom 300 were "lost at sea in the Golcondah") in China and says "in addition to the China War and our particular friend in this quarter, there has been a dreadful outbreak in Afghanistan - the population there appears to have risen en masse. Sir Alexander Barnes with many other officers have fallen, and the troops are besieged in their Camps... they must be starved out, unless they have ammunition enough... The postage I pay for receiving each letter is only the overland postage from Bombay to Calcutta and thence to this place 1 rupee 2 annas, & on sending I pay the same."
