Ryepore (Raipur), the headquarters of the Chhattisgarh Division and District of Ryepore, Central Provinces, is situated 21°14' N and 81°39' E, 513 miles from Calcutta and 188 from Nagpur, in an open plain about 4 miles from the Kharun River. The Ryepore District was ruled by the Marathas until 1818, when all the Nagpur territories were administered by the British Resident until 1830. From 1830 to 1853 the District was again administered by Maratha Subahs on the system organised by the British officers, and on the whole successfully.
