Description

India, 1854, 4a Red & Blue, 2nd Printing, Head Die II, Frame Die I (6D; SG 19). Cut square, large to ample margins, used with 1a Deep Red, Die II (4B; SG 13), two singles, mostly large to ample margins, just barely touching on left stamp, all tied by barred "35" cancels on 1858 cover to Malden, England, sender's directive "Via Marseilles", red framed "Malligaum/Paid" (Giles 2) with manuscript "2-12 58" date added despatch on back, red transit and London (Jan. 4, 1859) transit datestamps, cover with manuscript accountancy notes on front panel, slight ink erosion, and minor soiling just affecting stamps, left 1a with mild crease due to placement over edge of cover, still Fine and attractive use, this cover paying the 6a for up to ¼oz via Marseilles rate
