Siegel - India, Patna, 1835, "PATNA/BEARg/18__" Oval Handstamp (Giles 12). Exceptionally bold strike with manuscript "19 Sep (18) 35" date and "1R6as" rate markings on arrival on folded letter datelined "Norwood (London) April 9th 1835", addressed to Patna, forwarded to Simla, carried privately and with "FORWARDED BY/THOS. HAVISIDE & CO./147 LEADENHILL STREET" framed handstamp (Rowe Rarity 3), "Inld. Ptg./Ship Do." rate handstamp (Giles SR9), red Calcutta (Sept. 14) transit backstamp, cover with some flaws from mounting on front panel, still Extremely Fine strike of this scarce Patna handstamp Cavendish - PATNA - INGOING MAIL EX BRISTOL/LONDON WITH OCTAGON-FRAMED OR SUPERB OVAL “PATNA” MARKS; Sept./Oct. 1834 pair of ELs from Bristol/London Patna (redirected to Allahabad/Simla with fair to fine octagonboxed “PATNA/BEARING” marks (HG8) - one with mainly fine boxed “THOS. HAVISIDE & Co./147, LEADENHALL STREET” London FAC across the join - and similar Apr. 1835 EL (repair to top of address-panel where damaged by hingemounts but still attractive) to the same addressee in Patna ex London with superb oval-framed “PATNA/BEARg” (HG12; recorded for 1835 only) nicely placed on the top flap (redirected to Simla) beside a very fine boxed “THOS. HAVISIDE & Co./147, LEADENHALL STREET” London FAC across the join. (3 covers) PHOTO - see page 67
