Howrah
Howrah (recorded under the same name) is a great city on the west bank of the Hooghly opposite Kolkata in West Bengal, the twin city of Calcutta and its western industrial and railway gateway. In the colonial period it grew with mills, docks and river craft. Within the Bengal Presidency it was a busy post town, and its pre-1854 markings document the mail of the river opposite the capital.
