Contai, or Kanthi (recorded as Contai), is a town near the Bay of Bengal in Purba Medinipur district, West Bengal, set behind the coastal dunes of the Medinipur shore. It was a salt-producing and trade town of the coast. As a post town of the Bengal Presidency its pre-1854 markings document the mail of the Medinipur seaboard.
