The Noakhali District, Eastern Bengal and Assam passed into the hands of the English in 1765, at which time the Tippera District was included with it in the "ihtimam" of Jalapur. A Collector was appointed in 1772, but Tippera and Noakhali were constituted a single revenue charge known as BHULUA, and continued to be known as such (under varying spellings) until 1868, when the popular name of Noakhali was first employed.
