About this mark

The Lodianah HG 5 handstamp

Lodianah lies on the south bank of the Sutlej river, in the Punjab, situated 30°56' N and 75°52' E on the Grand Trunk Road, 1148 miles from Calcutta and 1215 from Bombay. In 1806 it was taken by Ranjit Singh, who gave it to his uncle, Raja Bhag Sing. A British cantonment was set up in 1809 west of the town, which up to 1838 was the outpost of the Sutlej frontier. The cantonment was abandoned in 1854. An ex-territorial Post Office was established by 1824, or earlier.

Lodianah HG 5 is a pre-1854 handstruck postal marking of the post office at Lodianah — the present-day Ludhiana — in the Punjab, British India, recorded in use around 1844. Known strikes are in red. It is listed in 1989 Catalogue, where each marking of British India is assigned a figure number — hence "HG 5".

No surviving cover bearing this mark has been recorded in the census yet — if you hold one, it may be the first recorded example. On the strength of that count the mark is graded "Common" — the grade moves automatically as new covers are recorded. Collectors searching for lodianah pre stamp covers, lodianah postal history or "Lodianah HG5" material can compare HG 5 across every office or browse the rest of the Lodianah marks.
