Srinagar (the Sreenuggur of early records) is a town on the Alaknanda river in the Garhwal Himalaya of Uttarakhand, the old capital of the Garhwal kingdom and later a route town on the pilgrim road to Badrinath and Kedarnath. It commanded the river routes of the hills. Within the North-Western Provinces it served as a hill post town, and its pre-1854 markings trace the mail of the Garhwal frontier.
