Sonipat (the Soonput of early records) is a city in Haryana on the Yamuna north of Delhi, an ancient town of the Kuru country on the great road between Delhi and the Punjab. It was a market and route town of the northern plain. In the era of the Company's northern posts it served as a mail town, and its pre-1854 markings trace the posts of the Delhi–Punjab road.
