Sambhar (the Samber of early records) is a town beside the great Sambhar Salt Lake in Rajasthan, the largest inland salt source of the country, long a revenue and trade town shared by the Jaipur and Jodhpur states. It lay on the routes of central Rajputana. In the era of the Company's Rajputana posts it served as a mail town, and its pre-1854 markings record the posts of the salt-lake country.
