Pithoragarh (the Petoragarh of early records) is a hill town in the Kumaon Himalaya of Uttarakhand, set in a small valley sometimes called Little Kashmir, guarding the routes toward Nepal and Tibet. It was an administrative and route town of the eastern hills. Within the North-Western Provinces it served as a hill post town, and its pre-1854 markings record the mail of the Kumaon frontier.
