Kannauj (the Kunnouj of early records) is a historic city on the Ganges in Uttar Pradesh, once the imperial capital of Harsha and the Gurjara-Pratiharas, long famed for its attar perfumes distilled from local flowers. It was an ancient trade town of the doab. Within the North-Western Provinces it served as a post town, and its pre-1854 markings record the mail of the central doab.
