Karauli (the Karowlee of early records) is a city in eastern Rajasthan, the former capital of a princely state in the ravine country near the Chambal, built of red sandstone with an old city palace. It lay on the routes between Agra and the Rajputana states. In the era of the Company's northern posts it served as a mail town, and its pre-1854 markings record the posts of the Chambal borderland.
