Description

1837 Kamptee – Chester – Parkgate via Madras entire, with Kamptee Giles 2 "KAMPTEE/POST PAID" handstamp, date "16 May 1837" & rate "12 Annas" (paid 12A, comprising 10A second-weight inland postage to Madras & 2A outward sea postage) applied in manuscript. At Madras, SD11 "OUT STATION/MADRAS/28 MY 28/1837/SHIP LETTER" & MX4 "MADRAS/28 MY 28/1837" transit marks applied. Sent to Portsmouth via Cape route; in the UK "INDIA LETTER/PORTSMOUTH" transit mark plus "1/4" (comprising 1s single-letter Portsmouth–Chester inland postage + 4d India incoming sea postage) applied in manuscript. The recipient at Chester paid this amount due and redirected the letter to Parkgate; for that, 4d Chester–Parkgate inland postage & "CHESTER/OC 9/1837" despatch mark were applied, and this bearing postage was collected from the recipient at Parkgate.
