The Deyrah HG 1 handstamp
Dehradun (the Deyrah of early records) is the chief city of the Doon valley in Uttarakhand, set between the Himalayan foothills and the Shivalik range, developed by the British as a garrison, survey and later hill-education centre after the annexation of the Doon. It commanded the routes to Mussoorie and the hills. Within the North-Western Provinces it served as a post town, and its pre-1854 markings record the mail of the Doon valley.
