Description

1836 Cawnpore – Lancaster soldiers' rate entire via Cape route, with Cawnpore Giles 8 "CAWNPORE/FREE/18.." despatch handstamp, as soldiers' letter sent to Calcutta free & there SD11 "CALCUTTA/GPO/SHIP LETTER/17 NO 17/1836" transit mark applied, sent bearing from India via the Cape route. Upon reaching the UK, "INDIA LETTER/LIVERPOOL" transit mark & "INDIA SOLDIERS/3/LIVERPOOL" handstamp (indicating 3d bearing postage, comprising 2d sea postage & 1d soldiers' India–UK privilege rate) were applied, which was collected from the recipient at Lancaster.
